Fred Byamukama Warns Police Officers Against Taking Bribes Regarding Driving Permits

Minister of State for Transport, Fred Byamukama has warned police officers against taking bribes regarding driving permits. He also added that officers who fail to supervise driving tests are inviting punishment to themselves.

For this matter, he adds that he was happy that the process of obtaining a driving license had been streamlined. This will tame corruption.

“People don’t have licenses, others have them but they acquired them through the wrong ways. We still have a challenge but now they are telling me that you are planning to have everything go digital including testing to prove one’s competence.”

He pointed out Naguru as his case study for corruption and probably going digital is going to help much.

“There is that place in Naguru which I think is the most corrupt place in this country where they issue the certificate of competence. In that place, I don’t think that people are tested. It’s on rare occasions that you go and they test you. Once you have your Shs 30,000 or Shs 40,000, they will clear you.” Fred Byamukama said.

Corruption has almost eaten up all systems of the government. When it comes to the transport sector, it’s even more complicated. Driving licenses are given to just anyone.

The ugliest part is that this has increased accidents on roads because people don’t know what they are doing. The Uganda Driver License System leadership should tame this vice before worse goes to worst.
