The former Kawempe South MP said that Tumwine was a great pan-Africanist.
Munyagwa recalled one time when Tunwine told him that as long as NRM is still in power, every African is free to come to Uganda.
Further, Munyagwa said that these revolutionaries did a great job by going to the bush. They did indeed liberate the country. However, over time, their achievements are getting eroded by themselves.
“Gen. Elly Tumwine was a Pan-Africanist. He once told me so long as they are still in charge, every African was free to come to Uganda.
I won’t downplay the fact that these people went to the bush to liberate this country. They did a great job, but over time, all their achievements are getting eroded,” said Munyagwa while appearing on the NBS Eagle.
Another panelist on the same show, Capt (Rtd) Lumaga Leon Lwanga applauded the late Tumwine. Lumaga, a son to the late Lt Col Sserwanga Lumaga, an NRA bush war hero, said that people are trying to overlook Tumwine’s achievements.
He pointed out the love Tumwine had for his country. This is because he decided to go to the bush despite having just graduated with a degree.
And according to Lumaga, degree holders didn’t look for jobs then, it was rather the other way round. He added that even the current Ugandan money has Tumwine’s art on it.
“The late Gen. Tumwine joined the army after he had finished his degree from Makerere. Those days it was rare for degree holders to join the army because jobs looked for them. His joining the Army shows the love he had for this country. People are trying to overshadow the contributions of Gen Elly Tumwine in this country. People don’t know that even the money we hold has Elly Tumwine’s art,” said Lwanga.
Meanwhile, Tumwine’sbody will be laid to rest tomorrow after two requiem masses. One will be at Kololo Independence Grounds today.
Another will follow tomorrow at his village home in Mukuru, Rwemikoma Subcounty in Kazo District. Burial will then follow on the same day.
