The Pastor said that these are always doing God’s work and therefore there is no reason for wanting pay.
This was after UPRS, the body responsible for musicians’ affairs announced new changes. UPRS said that artistes will have to start earning from their music and all those who play their songs will have to pay.
However, according to Kiganda, it’s the desire to be like secular musicians that is getting gospel singers off track.
He added that these are always looking at the lifestyle of artists like Chameleone, Bebe Cool and go ahead to emulate them. Kiganda further said that maintaining a celebrity lifestyle is something costly and not everyone can afford it.
He also faulted events promoters for escalating the affairs of gospel singers.
“I think Gospel singers shouldn’t be paid because they are always doing God’s work. They have veered off their course and are now trying to compete with the secular musicians. They want to live a life of celebrities like Raga Dee, Chameleone but they forget it’s very expensive to maintain. These should actually be referred to as gospel ministers instead of gospel artistes. Promoters have also worsened the situation. They always want these artistes to go to the best and most expensive studios,” Bishop Kiganda said.
The gospel singers however led by one of their leaders Lanek disagreed with the Bishop’s opinion.
Lanek said that these pastors have done little to help the singers despite the huge monies they collect from the flock.
