Helicopter Crashes On UPDF Soldiers In Congo, Leaves Many Dead

Uganda People’s Defence Forces soldiers have reportedly perished when a helicopter crashed on them in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The MI-17 helicopter is usually good for transportation, medical evacuation and VIP travel. Apparently, it had just brought food consignment to the to the troops in the fight against ADF rebels. As it left, it tumbled and exploded during the takeoff process.

The army spokesperson, Brig. Gen Felix Kulayigye, in an interview confirmed the incident. He said a Russian made MI-17 helicopter crashed in Eastern DRC.

He also revealed that every time a helicopter crashed, a board of inquiry is established to investigate the matter. In addition, he also said a board has already been activated for this matter and investigations are underway.

The Armed Forces Commander in Chief, Yoweri Museveni ordered a board to inquire on why army helicopters are falling from the skies.

Inquiries will be led by Maj Gen Charles Okidi, the UPDF deputy commander according to a military radio message sent out last evening.

High military sources say the helicopter struck a tree which made it spin uncontrollably before it crashed on troops who were collecting the food.
