Former leader of opposition, Hon Mathias Mpuuga has claimed that the National Unity Platform (NUP) party stagnated after it’s formation. Mpuuga was the deputy president of the party for Buganda region not until he fell out with the party hierarchy. Since then, both groups have been lambasting each other.
According to the Nyendo-Mukungwe MP, the party made a significant impact on Uganda’s political landscape.
This is after it performed exceptionally well after being formed three months before the national polls. However, years after this exceptional performance, the party has not made any positive strides.
He stated;
“The party (NUP) performed exceptionally well, going to the polls barely three months after its founding. It made a significant impact on Uganda’s political landscape. The party has since stagnated because, four years after its founding, it still lacks structures.”
The MP who now serves as the Parliamentary Commissioner said that he and his fellow MPs made the difficult decision to quit the mother party, the DP, and join NUP. They then decided to give Hon Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine the chance to lead the new party.
Some people knew him for his political views but they still had to explain to key stakeholders why he was the one to take over the mantle of leadership.
“We made the tough choice to leave DP and decided to start and join a new party. At the time, we indicated that we wanted to give Mr Kyagulanyi a chance to lead the new party. We had to explain to key stakeholders who he was, as few people knew him for his political views.”
About his falling out with the party, Mpuuga said that he can disagree with someone and still not resort to cheaply attacking them.
According to the MP, these are values that were imparted in him when he started serving royalty (Buganda Kingdom) at a very young age.
