House Committee On Human Rights Should Visit Kitalya Prison, Kadaga Orders

Rt Hon. Rebecca Kadaga has ordered the house committee on human rights to visit Kitalya prisons. The speaker is concerned about the state of prisoners in that prison. The condition of the MP-elect Mohammed Ssegirinya must have triggered this order. Mohammed Ssegirinya is facing accusations of falsifying academic papers to attain a parliamentary seat.

Ssegirinya is currently in Nairobi receiving treatment. However, his condition has improved since he left.

Apart from this, Hon. Francis Zaake, Mityana municipality legislator raised concerns too. Apparently, he was able to access the prisons and the condition in which most National Unity Platform supporters are is alarming. He further pointed out that he had always been denied access to Kitalya until recently. Zaake said most of these people have no access to medication yet they are in terrible condition.

“I was finally granted access after a long time of being stopped from accessing the facility. I found many people experiencing abdominal pains, they are poorly fed on half-cooked posho and the hygiene is also a disaster,”

Zaake pointed that most of the prisoners survive on pain killers and yet that is not what they need.

On hearing this, speaker Kadaga tasked the house committee to visit Kitalya and come up with a report.

“We want a report as soon as possible. I hereby direct the committee (of human rights) to investigate the matter,”  she said.

This is however not the first time Kitalya is attracting inspection from authorities. The last time the house committee carried out investigations, nothing substantial was reached.
