On Tuesday, Ms. Kalenge appeared before Nakawa Grade One Magistrate, Mr. Ponsiano Odwori who remanded her to prison.
On March 12, while at the Internal Affairs Ministry, Ms. Kalenge, with intent to steal, demanded shs350, 000 from Mr. Yonah Mugoya. It is alleged that Ms. Kalenge demanded this money over the phone when Mr. Mugoya called to find out whether his passport is ready.
Furthermore, Ms. Kalenge told Mr. Mugoya not to disturb her if he had no intentions of paying the money she asked for. The reason she allegedly gave him for asking for this amount was to hurry the process of issuing the passport.
Ms. Kalenge, however, pleaded not guilty to these charges and applied for bail through her lawyer, Mr. Gordon Kifudde. Mr. Kifudde told the court that his client has two children who need care in addition to the fact that she is expectant.
In a turn of events, the prosecution, led by Barbra Kyomugisha, objected to the bail application. They said that the suspect is likely to interfere with the ongoing investigations in case she is released on bail.
Ms. Kalenge is remanded until April 8.
Last week, detectives from the Anti-Corruption Unit arrested the accused immigration officer after a phone call recording presented by Mr. Mugoya. Since then, they have received many complaints from people in Eastern Uganda implicating the accused.
