However, the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and internal affairs has questioned this proposal. The committee chairperson Rosemary Nyakikongoro revealed this addressing the parliament.
The Kabale Municipality MP Nicholas Kamara, informed Parliament that NIRA plans to introduce an express fee for IDs to first timers and those renewing theirs.
He said the registration body wants to increase it during the mass enrollment exercise between June 2023 and August 2024.
Hon. Nicholas revealed this while presenting a matter of national importance questions on this proposal during this tough economic climate.
“The government has hiked the price for replacement and change of ID particulars to shs200,000 from shs50,000. Rt. Hon. Speaker and colleagues, there’s no known basis or criteria upon which the physical replacement and change of national ID particulars have been hiked from 50,000 to 200,000. This I think is too high and not affordable to an ordinary Ugandan,” he said.
He said and hopes that the Ministry of Internal Affairs rethinks the proposal in these tough economic times.
However, David Muhoozi, the state minister of Internal Affairs informed MPs that this is not a new proposal as it has been presented to parliament before.
He said it is also catered for in the registration of persons though he noted that they are willing to renew it and reach a common position with parliament.
