Indian Covid Variant Spreads Further In Africa

The fast-spreading Covid variant from India has continued to spread and cause havoc across the continent of Africa. It has been detected in three more countries namely; Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nigeria.

The confirmation in the three countries brings the total number of African Nations with the variant to seven.

Initial studies show that the Indian variant also known as the B. 1. 617 can spread faster, and more easily than other variants.

The WHO coordinator for the Covid-19 response in Africa, Dr. Nsenga said he had no further details on the confirmed number of infections in the three nations. He also said there were no details on the people who tested positive in the countries.

Before these three, four other nations had confirmed the presence of the variant and all had links to recent travel to India. The nations are; Kenya with five cases, Uganda with one case, South Africa with four cases, and Morocco with two cases.

India detected this variant back in October 2020 and the World Health Organization immediately classified it as a ‘variant of global concern’.

The variant is currently being studied to determine whether it is responsible for the deadly surge in India. India is currently facing a second wave of the Coronavirus that is overwhelming hospitals.
