Intern Doctors Blame Strike On Failed Fulfilment Of Presidential Directives

Intern Doctors have said the people who have failed to fulfill the presidential directives are the ones who have forced them to strike. The president had said interns should be paid half of the salary the practicing doctors are receiving. Up until now though, they have never realized this.

“The President directed that we get half what our seniors get. Ask them why they haven’t implemented the Presidential directive. Don’t look at the oppressed. Look at the other person who has the power to implement the directive,” Dr. Musa Mulumba.

Mulumba says all they are asking for are basic needs that government is more than able to fulfill. Without these needs, Mulumba says the intern doctors won’t serve as they should.

“We (intern doctors) are asking for basic needs. An intern doctor earns UGX 2.5 million, that’s taxed to UGX 1.75 million. Look at the current situation we are living in; decent accommodation is like UGX 500,000 in Kampala, plus. How much do you spend on feeding daily? Don’t we have other needs?,”

“For a doctor or nurse to be positioned to save a life, they should be healthy in mind and body. That comes with ensuring they have eaten.”

Therefore, intern doctors for this matter have given the government an ultimatum of 72 hours to listen and provide a remedy to their grievances. Otherwise, they lay down their tools. The Interns are in pharmacy, nursing and midwifery departments.
