As the number of people in line to fly increases, more airlines plan to stop blocking seats to accommodate the growing number of passengers. This means that people will seat next to each other which will increase the chances of getting infected if a sick person is on board. With the Covid-19 pandemic still raging, we don’t know if it’s safe to fly.
In December, airlines in the United States will allow every seat on planes to be sold. Some of these airlines include Southwest, United, and American Airlines. JetBlue will drop the number of blocked seats and so will Delta and Alaska; they hope to do this sometime in 2021.
The airline industry funded a study that found that the risk of viral spread on planes is very low if everyone wears a mask. They, therefore, said it is safe to fly since planes have good ventilation and very strong air filters.
However, the U.S. Center for Disease Control says sitting within 6 feet of others, for hours, could also assist the spread. And even though it is a requirement for passengers to wear a mask on board, there’s no guarantee that everyone will. U.S. airlines have banned more than 1,000 people for not wearing masks.
So, to sum it all up, every side thinks they are right and the other is wrong. Whether or not to fly is now entirely one’s choice. But fly with caution.
