Jacob Oulanyah has emerged as the winner of the speakership race. This is going to be his first term in office as the speaker of parliament. He has been the deputy speaker for Rebecca Kadaga as she reigned as speaker. This, however, has been a very tight race for him Unlike usual, there was a tight competition with former speaker, Rebecca Kadaga. The two have been going head to head since they both expressed interest in this post.
At some point, we thought, one person would leave room for the other. This came after these two met the president who also failed to make a decision between the two. However he kind of cooked the fire that was between these candidates. NRM CEC had several meetings before coming to a final decision of Oulanya being the party flag bearer. This didn’t sit well with Kadaga who decided to come as an independent.
What next for Kadaga?
The question though is what next after Kadaga losing this race to Jacob Oulanyah. Is she still part of the NRM party. Sources yesterday said that CEC didn’t actually vote because Oulanya was declared unopposed. This just means Kadaga must be furious so it leaves her relationship with NRM very shaky. The 11th parliament is set for some drama with this kind of start.
Semujju got 15, Kadaga got 197, Oulanya had 310. There was jubilation heard within the house on hearing that Jacob Oulanyah has won the race. However, as the norm has been, that after speakership, one wins themself vice president spot, it’s not automatic now. This is because Kadaga will be considered a rebel member of NRM.
