However, a spokesperson for Mengo Hospital said that their hands are clean.
On Friday, James Bugembe Ssenkubuge, 52, got admitted to the hospital and less than 24 hours later, he suddenly died. The hospital billed the deceased’s family a whooping Shs10m minus the Shs200,000 mortuary fees.
According to a close friend of the deceased, Mr. Ephraim Kasozi, Ssenkubuge blacked out at a garage in Mulago. He had taken a car to be serviced on Wednesday evening and they immediately rushed him to a clinic in his home area in Kawempe.
At about 8 am on Thursday, his condition had worsened so the clinic referred him to Mengo Hospital.
Upon their arrival, the hospital asked them for Shs900,000 to carry out a series of scans and tests, an amount they paid in rapid installments.
The test results showed that Ssenkubuge had bled in his brain after a couple of veins burst, therefore the hospital recommended emergency surgery.
James Bugembe Ssenkubuge’s Family agreed to pay the bill
Staff on duty then told the family that surgery, as well as three days of treatment, would cost about Shs9.9m. This included a Shs4m professional fee for a surgeon only named Dr. Obiga. The family agreed to the bill and asked that the hospital begins the procedure.
To the family’s disappointment, the hospital said they would only take Ssenkubuge into the theatre if they made a Shs2m down payment. The family had no cash at hand but a few hours later they received Shs1.9m on mobile money, which the hospital told them to provide in cash.
They presented the money and the patient saw his way into the theatre at 4 pm, eight hours after his arrival at the hospital. Several hours had also passed since the hospital determined that he requires emergency surgery, while visibly unresponsive.
At around 8 pm, doctors announced the surgery successful and that Ssenkubuge would be taken to ICU to recuperate.
However, slightly after midnight, another doctor told the restless family that the patient had a half-dead brain. He assured them that the best doctors were doing all they can to revive him.
Doctors took Ssenkubuge off life support at around 1pm on Friday to observe if he had been revived. Half an hour later, they announced him dead and moved his body to the mortuary
The hospital presented the total bill and the professional fee had increased to Shs4.6m. The hospital went ahead to ask for the initial Shs9.9m they had charged for the surgery and three-day treatment despite Ssenkubuge breathed his last before a day went by.
On top of this, the morgue attendants also asked and were paid Shs200, 000 before they released the body.
