Japanese Serial Killer on Twitter Pleads Guilty To Nine Murders

A Japanese serial killer recently pleaded guilty to killing nine people after contacting them on Twitter. This high profile case sent a shockwave throughout the whole country. With his nickname, ‘’Twitter Killer’’, , the police arrested Takahiro Shiraishi in 2017 after body parts were found in his flat.

He told the court in Tokyo on Wednesday that all allegations against him were correct. However, his lawyers argued that his charges should be reduced because his victims all gave consent to be killed.

The case attracted wide interest with over 600 people lining up for 13 public gallery seats to watch the first hearing on Wednesday. The Japanese serial killer will therefore face a death penalty. He will be hang, should the courts convict him of murder.

According to the prosecution however, Mr. Shiraishi opened a Twitter account in 2017 to contact women thinking about suicide. He said these were easy targets whose ages ranged between 15-26. He allegedly murdered, dismembered, and sorted their body parts in his flat in the Japanese city Zama near Tokyo.

After exposing the killings, Japan was shocked and a debate about websites on which suicide is discussed started. At the time, the government indicated the possibility of introducing new regulations. It also prompted a change in Twitter’s rules to stop users from promoting or encouraging suicide.

Twitter’s chief executive, Jack Dorsey said at the time the case was ‘’extremely sad’’.
