And soon as the former minister of education and sports assumed office, she promised to lead Uganda to a middle income status.
Middle income status was also promised by President Museveni that it would be achieved in the country by 2020.
However by 2021, Uganda is still classified as a third world country.
The government blames this largely on COVID 19 which paralyzed the economy hence pulling it backwards.
Alupo in her address said that the government is increasing house hold income and monetizing the economy.
It was these that would deliver Uganda to the promised land out of high levels of poverty.
“We are mobilising towards increasing household income and monetization of the economy. And when we monetise our economy fully, you and I know that we shall create more jobs, we shall enhance the production of more goods and services. We shall also grow our technology and consequently widen our taxbase and that will push our economy to middle income status.” Jessica Alupo said.
However, majority of Ugandans still perform economic activities on a subsistence level. Most of them work on a hand to mouth basis. This greatly endangers achievement of a sustainable economy that would eventually lead to a middle income status.
The COVID 19 pandemic has also greatly and adversely ravaged economies globally.
Recovering from the pandemic effects will surely take some time and worst of all it’s still around wrecking more havoc.
