Hugs and cheers were the highlight of Wednesday night following the return of rescued Ugandans who were stranded in Sudan. They were stuck after clashes broke out between rival military factions in the country.
A group of 211 Ugandans, working and living in Sudan arrived at Entebbe Airport last night at around 2:30am. They were accompanied by External Security Organization Director General, Amb Joseph Ocwet aboard a Uganda Airlines Airbus.
The group included students, business expatriates and diplomats some of whom were picked up from Bahir Dar airport in Northern Ethiopia.
They were received at Entebbe airport by Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba who the President had assigned the job of taking charge of the rescue mission.
Following the outbreak of the conflicts between the military factions, an estimate of 300 Ugandans had been trapped in Sudan. Therefore, rescuing 211 means there is still a big number of Ugandans who have not been rescued yet.
Uganda’s Ambassador to Khartoum, Dr Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu said a comprehensive assessment of those still trapped will be made later. This will help the embassy determine who still needs to be rescued as well as their location.
The evacuation of the stranded Ugandans followed a directive from President Museveni to Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
The president directed him to coordinate the mission and dispatch an Uganda Airlines airbus to pick them up.
Some of the Ugandans who returned home last night had been stranded in hotel rooms in Khartoum for some time.
They had even started making distress calls to their families back home following the fights.
Uganda has now joined several other countries that have in the past rescued their citizens from the war-engulfed Khartoum.
