Kale Kayihura Concludes 41-Year Career In UPDF As He Retires

After over four decades of service, one of Uganda’s most prominent former military leaders Gen Kale Kayihura has officially retired from the armed forces.

Gen Kale Kayihura served as the Inspector General of Police from 2005 until 2018, overseeing law enforcement across the country.

However, he was indefinitely suspended from active police duties three years ago amid a corruption purge within state institutions. At a ceremony today attended by senior UPDF officers, the 63-year-old Gen Kayihura was retired upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60 years.

He commissioned into the National Resistance Army, the precursor to the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces, back in 1981.

Meanwhile Gen Kayihura’s tenure as police chief was notably turbulent and controversial at times. Supporters credit him with professionalizing the force but critics argue serious abuses also occurred under his watch.

In 2017, he was questioned over mismanagement and declined to assist presented to prosecutors.

Since his suspension, Gen Kayihura has stayed largely out of the public spotlight while reportedly living abroad.

UPDF leadership acknowledge his nearly four decades of loyal service to Uganda’s security apparatus through various roles over the years.

With his compulsory retirement now formalized, speculation will surround Gen Kayihura’s legacy and next steps and whether he could potentially face further scrutiny over past performance in leadership positions within the police and military.

The official retirement function for the 11 generals was held at State House in Entebbe.

Also retired was Lt Gen James Nakibus, Maj Gen Samuel Wasswa Mutesassira, Maj Gen Joseph Arocha, and Maj Gen David Wakaalo among others.
