Kampala City Running Out Of Parking Space

Drivers in Kampala Capital City get pain and frustration whenever the time to find parking space in the city comes. Many of them even spend more time looking for parking space than the time they take to travel from home to Kampala.

This situation has also been worsened by disagreements over parking spaces. Despite all this pain and frustration, KCCA is taking its time in creating more adequate parking spaces.

However much this situation has been linked to the skyrocketing number of cars, some blame it on the numerous city arcades. These are usually built with no parking space.

KCCA designed a five- year strategic plan for 2014 to 2019. Among the key areas of concentration, happened to be the management of public parking.

It proposed entering Public-Private Partnerships to construct modern transport terminals with Multi-storied parking facilities in the city.

They proposed this as a strategy to decongest the narrow city roads. However, they never achieved this. The Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago said lack of resources frustrated this project.

Lukwago revealed that despite KCCA’s policy, some arcades and commercial malls have not enough parking spaces for clients. Not only do inefficient parking systems result in congestion and increased carbon emissions, they also waste commuters’ time, leading to lost productivity.

An average of 30 minutes is spent by a driver pursuing a coveted spot, thus the need for parking towers. In some cases, some drivers fear parking along some streets that they deem insecure.

Currently KCCA has 4,127 public parking spaces under the management of Multiplex. The 1500 spaces were eaten up by the construction of Kampala Fly Over, the motorised transport lane along Luwum Street.

Additionally, the many mushrooming Boda Boda stages in the city also ate up some spaces, among others.
