Different artistes have complained about the copyright law and some like Eddy Kenzo have formed a federation to tackle that issue.
It is almost a year since the federation was formed and the copyright hasn’t been active. Kenzo has pushed this issue for quite a while and even met President Museveni on it.
According to Karole Kasita, most people in the music industry don’t earn the money that they are supposed to earn.
She said people like producers are supposed to earn money from a song for a lifetime but because the copyright law is inactive, they don’t earn that much. She said the industry needs much more professionalism and artists are going to earn more.
“Our problem in Uganda is copyright. Ideally, the producer would receive their payment when the song is streamed, along with the musician. However, currently, we pay the producers upfront after production, and that’s where it often ends. When the song is released and perhaps becomes successful, it’s solely up to the artist’s generosity to go back and further appreciate the producer,” she said.
