Kasese Accident Blamed On Bad Roads And Roadworks

The Kasese accident on the Hima-Rugendabara road in Western Uganda where a number of vehicles collided and killed many are known black spots. Be that as it may, nothing has been done to send a warning for motorists, not even signposts.

Besides that, the highway section is also under construction. Construction workers poured piles of gravel into the road. This renders only one side of the road motorable as confirmed by police and Uganda National Roads Authority on Wednesday.

The Rwenzori East Regional traffic officer, Mathias Okwir, said 33 people came out with injuries in the night accident. It involved 5 vehicles and happened on Tuesday night.

‘’The cause of the accident was the heaps of marram on the road and no safety signs for motorists,’’ Mr. Okwir said noting the materials poured into the road.

A survivor of the Kasese accident, Mr. Moris Kikwamimbi, said they were about 25 people in a canter truck heading for burial. As they drove, a speeding Premio slammed into their vehicle near a Weighbridge after Rugendabara trading center.

Contradicting reports on the number of the dead.

More on the story, the police, and the Uganda Red Cross Society are both giving conflicting figures of the accident.

URCS spokesperson, Irene Nakasita tweeted that their first responders said up to 32 people died in the accident. On the contrary, police, who arrived at the scene two hours later, said only 10 people, had died on the spot.

The police further said the Red Cross volunteers mistook individuals who fainted for dead. However, the list of the deceased released by police did not include Bwambale Zakaria’s name. Zakaria’s body was taken for burial in Bundibugyo, and when asked to clarify the anomaly, traffic officer Okwir said he was busy at the moment.
