The government gave them an ultimatum to register their sim cards by April 15 or else they risk paying a cash fine.
Ezra Chiloba, the director of the Communications Authority said the registration process is aimed at combating cyber-crime and fraud.
These have been on the increase in the digital space hence the need to register users.
Lately, the authority has maintained that the regulations will e implemented and those with unregistered sim cards will face fines of up to Ksh300,000. They will either pay the fine or serve a jail sentence of 6 months.
“There would be no extension, so those still dragging their feet should wake up to the reality and register with their respective telecom service providers or face permanent deactivation,” Chiloba stated.
He further instructed network operators to speed up the data clean-up exercise and deactivation of unregistered sim cards. Another target of the deactivation is those with inaccurate registration data.
He said this will help them to join other countries that have proper data systems. It will also promote efforts to avert cases of cybercrimes.
This directive will also affect users with multiple sim cards with no proper registration details.
Apparently, this exercise will affect those who registered their sim cards between 2002 and 2015.
“The regulations state that Simcard registration includes a photo ID. Since 2017, we have asked mobile service providers to comply, but they have not,” Chiloba said.
