The suspect is charged with the murder of former Buyende District Police Commander, Muhammad Kirumira. Kirumira was murdered along with his friend Resty Nlinya Mbabazi on September 8, 2018.
Court started the trial of Hamza Mwebe and Abubaker Kalungi in connection to the murder last year. However, Mwebe got acquitted by lady justice Margrate Mutonyi in December 2022.
This happened after the prosecution could not prove their case against him due to lack of evidence.
She also ruled that Kalungi still had a case to answer hence the proceeding.
In March 2023, the court heard the final submission from the prosecution led by Thomas Jatiko. He asked the court to consider the evidence presented before it to find Kalungi guilty of the double murder.
Apparently, a charge and caution statement allegedly made by Kalungi implicated him in the murder. Therefore, the prosecution asked court to look further into this.
The prosecution said Kalungi told his mother that his friends, Mwebe Ndi Abdu Kateregga had betrayed him. Kalungi allegedly told his mother of how he got hired to trail Kirumira which he did.
He then updated the assassins who later attacked the Police Commander and killed him and his friend.
Kalungi, as expected, denied the crime saying he had been working in Ndejje near his home at the time of the murder.
