Kyambogo University ’s administration is caught up in a tag of war with the University Secretary. The struggle is happening over the renewal of the latter’s contract as they trade accusations of favoritism and tribalism.
Mr. Charles Okello, the University Secretary has on various occasions tried to get his contract renewed. This started last year when his contract expired but has since faced difficulties in renewing it.
It should be noted that several meetings have been held to resolve this matter but have not yielded any fruit.
This includes one that they held just on Monday this very week, in which the Vice Chancellor, Prof Eli Katunguka Rwakishaya appeared.
Kyambogo University’s spokesperson, Mr Ruben Twinomujuni said the matter is being looked into process by process.
“It is not automatic for such a renewal to happen; it takes time. The relevant authorities are looking into the matter and the processes are being followed, so we can’t predict whether it will be renewed or not,” Mr Twinomujuni said last evening.
Apparently, Mr Okello has only served one term in the office and is only seeking to serve for a second. In November last year, the contracts of both Prof Katunguka and Mr Okello expired at the same time.
This therefore indicated that the duo had to apply for re-appointment through the university council.
Prof Katunguka had his contract renewed almost as soon as the two had reapplied, but sadly for Mr Okello, nothing has been done up to date.
“I wrote the report of the VC before he was re-appointed but… I don’t know what the problem is at this material time,” Mr Okello said in a telephone interview.
He, through his lawyers petitioned the acting university secretary, raising 12 grounds to support his reappointment. The lawyers also sought redress on why their client is being ignored and sidelined.
