Daniel Lutaaya, a former NBS journalist, has said labour export is not slavery as people want to put it. He says this was an idea sold to Africans by the people from the West.
Daniel says he doesn’t understand why people only consider it slavery when it is connected to Arab countries and not so with countries likes of UK or USA.
“Labour export is not slavery. This is a wrong perception sold to you by the west. The word Kyeyo wasn’t coined in 2005 when Middle east labour export began. It started in the 80s and 90s. Ugandans then were going to UK to work as domestic workers, was that also slavery?”
“So it’s only slavery when it’s Arabs employing our youth, but when it’s white people it isn’t?…” He added.
Daniel has said instead of accusing Arab countries of slavery, perhaps the country should do better to retain people here.
Much as flying out to work is trashed, he says housemaids here can never earn the shs1M they receive from Arab countries. Maids here earn 200,000 at maximum. This is why they choose to fly out of the country.
However, some people say considering how hard they work, it’s equivalent to slavery.
“Daniel, it becomes slavery depending on how the employer treats you. Those girls work 18 hours a day, without leave until the end of the 2-year contract,” a one C. Ayebare.
Meanwhile, it’s so unfortunate all the issues that maids have to go through in Arab countries. However, it’s not any better here in Uganda because it’s almost impossible to develop in this country while doing that job.
Maybe the government should think of regulating this kind of work too to avoid exploitation.
