Let Ugandans Take Charge Of Natural Resources – Kabuleta Advises Government

Joseph Kabuleta, leader of the National Economic Empowerment Dialogue (NEED), has said government should let Ugandans take charge of natural resources.

He says it will reduce taxes on the informal sector if the country is to attain the middle income status. Until the government empowers the citizens economically, he says there is a lot to do to come up from the low income status.

“When Museveni took over in 1986, he discovered that the backbone of Obote’s economy was cooperative societies. Very functional, some even sponsored his bush war. He then decided to kill them to retain the number of peasants at 70%,” he said.

As it is, Kabuleeta says people are only working to put food on their tables. He has blamed Museveni for making foreigners dominate the coffee business.

“By 1986 when Museveni came into power, Uganda was exporting over $194 million worth of coffee every year with so many local people benefiting from this. Yet now we make over $700 million but with seven out of ten companies that export coffee being owned by foreigners,” he said.

Earlier this month, Museveni boldly said Uganda is now a middle income economy.

Unfortunately, the World Bank recently came out to say Uganda is still under the low middle income status. From the look of things economically though, Uganda has a lot to do.
