Luwero District: Storm Attacks Villages, Displaces Learners And Residents

A number of classroom blocks has been de-roofed following a heavy rainstorm that ravaged villages in Luwero district. Also, a number of residents have lost their houses and crops due to the same heavy downpour.

Over 12 houses were de-roofed in Kamira Town Council in Luwero district after they experienced the heavy storm. In this same area, two blocks housing the primary seven, primary six, library, and head teacher’s office at Kamira Church of Uganda Primary School were destroyed.

The school’s head teacher, Ms Norah Nalwese said despite there being no casualties, the school buildings need to be repaired.

“We pray that both the government and well-wishers will come to the rescue of our school. The children cannot study under tree sheds. We need quick intervention,” she said in an interview on Wednesday.

The Kamira Village in Kamira Town Council chairperson, Mr Elizephan Wagaba said some residents have been left homeless.

“Some of our people lost banana and coffee plantations among other crops. We call upon the district authorities to come to the rescue of the affected residents,” he said.

The storm also destroyed school buildings, gardens and a number of businesses in Bombo Town Council. One of the residents at Bajjo village in Bombo TC said they lost their house after a tree fell during the heavy storm.

“My family escaped unhurt, but we lost our house. We also lost the banana and coffee plantations as a result of the heavy storm,” he said.

The months between August and December usually constitute the second major rain season in Uganda.

However, weather experts said the rain might be destructive in some parts of the country, especially in the central region.
