Makerere University government-sponsored students are not happy with the way they are treated. Yesterday they were striking over delayed payments of their allowances for the past two months.
Makerere is the biggest public university in Uganda. Students who perform well in their A level are often given an opportunity to study for free at this university. Being sponsored by government comes with some privileges alongside it.
One of those is an allowance every month for the time they will be at the University studying. This allowance is mainly meant for food to sustain them and other few basic needs for them.
According to the students, it has been three months without receiving any allowance money on their accounts. They said they have become very patient but it seems no solution for them at the moment.
At Makerere, the best way to communicate is to strike or even storm some offices at campus to make sure they are heard. This is also the same for the government sponsored students and what they did yesterday was to storm the administration offices.
According to daily monitor reporters on ground, students said they are very hungry. Furthermore, they say they have gone two months without money for food. This is also a very long period for them as students.
“Makerere University government-sponsored students storm the institution’s administrative offices (Senate building) demanding for their allowances. The students say they are facing feeding and accommodation challenges because they haven’t received their allowances for the last two months,” the report read.
