Makerere University Seeking Funds For Renovation

Makerere University is seeking funding of up to Shs130 billion to renovate halls of residence and equip laboratories. The details of this are contained in the 2023-24 national budget framework paper by the parliament budget committee.

In this, the top administration at the university decried inadequate funding for the rehabilitation of the dilapidated infrastructure. Ignatius Mudime presented a report before the budget committee arguing that some public universities are suffering with the issue of old infrastructure.

He emphasized the old universities giving an example of Makerere. He said this old infrastructure puts the lives of the students at risk hence the need for more funding for renovation.

The government designated Shs17 billion in the next financial year to cater for renovation works at Lumumba and Mary Stuart halls. However, this is said to be inadequate.

According to Mudime, the university requires an additional Shs52 billion. This is for the renovation of the Schools of Medicine and additional 10 halls of residence.

He also said the University requires an additional Shs53 billion. This is required for the construction and equipping laboratories at the College of Health Sciences and College of Veterinary Medicine.
