Police fired teargas and live bullets on Wednesday to disperse a crowd that had gathered to listen to Dr Kizza Besigye in Rukungiri town.

Edison Nasasira, a taxi operator, was hit by a stray bullet at Rukungiri playground.

For hours police battled with Besigye and his supporters who hurled stones as police officers fired live bullets.  Besigye’s car was hit by bullets in the scuffle.

Kigezi Region RPC Denis Namuwoza said that an unidentified Besigye supporter in Rukungiri was hit by a stone that killed him instantly.

During the shootout, the commander was heard telling officers “don’t finish the bullets” while an officer replied “Eyange Ttekuba” [mine doesn’t shoot].

Police officers were seen reloading guns to fire more while arresting Besigye and rushing away at the same time.

It is reported that the second person who had been rushed to Nyakibale hospital has also died.

Residents carried the body of the deceased while singing the national anthem as they demanded for their right to association.
