Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations will this time go on without Joventa Tukahirwa, one of the 44 Christians from Kitwe Catholic Parish in Ntungamo District.
The 44 embarked on a 393km pilgrim walk ahead of the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations on June 3.
The 54-year-old Joventa Tukahirwa was on her fourth pilgrimage to Namugongo last week. However, though, this became a one-way journey for her with no return.
The group did not experience any problems until Saturday when a speeding vehicle knocked Tukahirwa. The accident happened at Kageti in Kiruhura District, about 30km from Mbarara City, on Saturday at around 4pm.
According to a witness, the accident happened as Tukahirwa tried to cross the road.
Fr. Deo Mugisha revealed that Tukahiirwa died an hour after the accident at Born Medical Centre in Lyantonde Town.
“The pilgrims were supposed to inform the leader of the group to stop the team and ensure that she crosses safely but she crossed suddenly without informing anybody and got hit by the vehicle,” he said.
Half of the pilgrims were forced to return to Ntungamo to attend the funeral as the other half continued on their pilgrimage.
Kiruhura District Police Commander Joe Komakech said the killer vehicle and the driver are still being held at Sanga Police Station.
“After the incident on Saturday, Sanga police rushed to the scene and took the victim to the nearest health facility,” he said.
According to Mr. Komakech, the speeding car and the victim who failed to follow traffic guidelines were to blame for the accident.
