Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has said the Buganda Land Board can’t be illegal if the constitution recognizes it. He was responding to President Museveni’s accusation that the Buganda Land Board is illegal. President Museveni ordered his camp (NRM), to resist Buganda Land Board schemes, saying that the setup is “illegal.”
However, Mayiga said if the board is illegal then everything else including the government are illegal.
“If the Buganda Land Board is illegal, it means that the Companies Act is also illegal, the Constitution is illegal, Parliament is illegal and the government is illegal,” Mayiga said.
Earlier this year, Buganda Kingdom got issues with the government. President Museveni, during the Heroes Day celebrations at Kololo in June expressed dismay at the century-old Mailo land tenure system. This is common in Buganda kingdom stating that it’s “an evil system”. Mayiga simply said the president made misguided comments.
Meanwhile, Mayiga said that the Kabaka of Buganda himself launched the Land Board. This is in line with the authority that the traditional norms allow, which the Constitution clearly recognizes. He advised the government to stop “creating problems” but rather focus on strengthening the capacity of security forces to investigate land matters.
