Mbabazi Offers Himself As Besigye’s Lawyer

Former presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi has criticized government for jailing Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) leader Dr Kizza Besigye, the runner-up in the February 18 presidential poll and undermining democracy.[2]

Speaking at a thanksgiving function for victory of Mr Kenneth Tumuhamye, Kanyantorogo Sub county chairperson elect, at Kishenyi Church of Uganda in Kanungu district on Sunday Mr Mbabazi said there cannot be peace when there is no democracy and freedom of expression.[1]

He called upon government to go on a round table with opposition leaders instead of jailing them.
He said: “I will speak the truth even if they zip up my mouth and cut off my hands until we get change. Nobody should threaten Ugandans because Uganda is for us all.”[3]

Mr Mbabazi who served as National Resistance Movemnet (NRM) party Secretary General and Prime Minister in president MUseveni’s government said he would be on Dr Besigye’s side in his legal battle with government.

Both candidates disputed the poll won by incumbent President Museveni claiming it was rigged.[4]
Mr Mbabazi who was in the third position unsuccessfully challenged Mr Museveni’s victory in the Supreme Court.
“I shouldn’t be going back into active law practice but because of the need for peace (in this country) I will be his (Besigye) lawyer,” Mr Mbabazi told the congregation.[5]
He condemned government for disrespecting homes of political leaders where they deploy armed forces illegally.[6]

He urged religious leaders not to fear to talk about politics because church and government used to have no difference.[7]
The function was graced by Kinkizi Diocese Emeritus Bishop John Wilson Ntegyereize and Kihihi Town council Mayor Mr Zephar Mugisha among other guests.[8] Bishop Ntegyereize described Mr Mbabazi as hero for having represented Kanungu in the presidential race. Mr Tumuhamye was a self-declared supporter of Mr Mbabazi in the presidential poll. He contested and won the seat on Independent ticket.[9]
