Medical interns have announced a sit down strike through their body, Federation for Uganda Medical Interns. They say government has not honored their promise of increasing their gross pay to Ugshs 3M. In a statement released, they intend to commence their strike on 17th May 2021. They addressed the letter to the chairperson Uganda Medical Internship Committee.
In their letter, they argue that they requested their parliament to increase their pay in September 2019. They granted this request. However, up to now, it has not been implemented.
“Medical interns presented a petition to the office of the speaker on 30th September 2019, which was presented to the committee of parliament on health on 25th October 2019 as per the speaker’s recommendation,” the letter read in part.
“Following our petition to parliament, in the committee of health policy statement Report of FY 2019/20 recommended that the gross pay for medical intern doctors be raised to UgX3M and that of graduate nurses raised to a gross pay of 2.2M respectively starting FY 2020/2021”
They went further to express their disappointment in how the parliament didn’t include their raise in the budget. Apparently, parliament had promised to include this amount in this year’s budget but the draft had nothing of the sort included. The medical interns say they are putting their tools down until government does something.
“It also got to our notice that the ministry of health budget was cut this financial year. It is on this basis that we as medical interns, following our meeting dated 9/5/2021 have decided to go on a sit-down strike starting 17th/May/2021 until the increment of the medical intern’s salary…”
