Medics Present New Demands Amidst Health Exhibition By Ugandans Online

Medics under the Uganda Medical Association (UMA) have announced new demands and recommendations. The medical body said these are aimed at improving the welfare of medics.

The association went the extra mile to explain the urgency of intern deployment as well as senior house officers. It said the colossal gap in Uganda of one doctor to 20,000 patients is partly covered by these people.

At the beginning of this week, the police arrested over 30 medical interns who were involved in a protest. They were protesting at parliament over failure of the Health Ministry to deploy them to government hospitals.

The interns carried placards with different messages on them during their Monday protest. They were intercepted by police on their way to Parliament and the president’s office.

They had planned to make their way to the above-mentioned places to hand over petitions detailing their complaints.

This demonstration followed protests from Ugandans against the poor state of health facilities and challenges in service delivery.

The protests came through a virtual campaign that started on Monday, dubbed Uganda Health Exhibition.

UMA president, Dr. Edith Nakku said the interns have waited 8 months at home to join medical internship work under supervision. She said this will help them get their full licenses and start working on their own.

She said the Ministry of Health has not budgeted payments for the junior doctors/interns and SHOs.

This is as it is seen in the national health budget for the Health Ministry for the year 2023-2024. As a result, she requested that the health budget should not be reduced anymore because it is already low.

“U.M.A recognizes the need and calls for the regulated entry of medical students into medical schools in order to maximize the good quality of graduating medical doctors and UMA calls for the regulated entry and exit of excellent medical doctors that will serve Ugandans for best health,” she said.

The association also recommended a standardized curriculum across the board for all medical doctor training universities.

In addition to that, they proposed pre-entry exams into medical schools at all universities both public and private.
