Meet Somaliland, A Country Where I5-Year-Olds Are Allowed To Vote

Have you met Somaliland, a 30-year-old country where 15year olds are eligible to vote? Somaliland broke off from Somalia 30 years ago. However, their country is not recognized yet internationally. Amidst all this though, it operates like a full country, it has a currency, passport, government, flag and army.

Currently, Somaliland is preparing for elections. They say, its the only country that is going to exhibit democracy in the recent one year.

“Somaliland could well end up as the only place in the Horn of Africa that has any form of democratic election at all this year,” says the director of the Rift Valley Institute, Mark Bradbury.

The vice chairperson of the current ruling party says Somaliland will be the horn of Africa if the pools are successful.

“I cannot tell you how important these elections are, we will be the sunshine of the Horn of Africa if we have successful polls.”

Somaliland has even tried not to have political parties aligned to tribes. This is because their tribal customs don’t cater for democracy.

However, the opposition members have started complaining about the delays in the polls. Apparently they are long over due.

“Many parliamentarians are greedy and selfish. They have grown fat during their 15 years in the house and are hugely reluctant to give up their seats. I also blame the government because it has benefitted from the status quo.”

Meanwhile the leadership of Somaliland believes if these polls are successful, they will be recognized internationally as a country.
