On October 29, the Ministry sent a letter to all District Health Officers to inform them about the children eligible for the vaccine. The letter said the children with comorbidities such as diabetes, sickle cell disease, cancer, and asthma should get the vaccine first. This is because they are at higher risk of developing severe disease.
The letter noted that the ministry of health has secured enough vaccines. It has now opened up officially to all people 18 years of age.
Back in March, the vaccination drive targeted health workers, teachers, security officers, the elderly, and persons above the age of 18 with comorbidities. Out of the 8.9 million covid-19 vaccines, they are using a total of 3.3 million doses among that group.
‘’The following guidance is hereby given. With immediate effect….. Stop using consent forms for all people coming for vaccination. Continue giving vaccination cards and register persons after receiving the vaccine and share information on a daily basis,’’ the letter reads in part.
The go-ahead on the use of the Pfizer vaccine in children follows the September announcement by the American Food and Drug Authority (FDA).
The manufacturers said the FDA made the authorization after assessing the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness in stopping the disease among youngsters.
The Ministry of Health started giving people shots of the Pfizer vaccine in September. This is after receiving a donation of 1.6 million doses from the USA. Initially, they had restricted it to Kampala, Wakiso, And Mukono. Especially because of hardships to manage the cold chain requirements of the vaccine.
However, they have now added more districts to the list and they include Mityana, Luwero, Jinja, Kamuli, among others.
