Dr Diana Atwine, the Secretary of the Ministry of Health, has said the ministry will soon have 53 functioning health centres at different border points.
She said the facilities will be equipped with specialized laboratories to support health services and management of cross-border health issues.
On Wednesday, December 1, 2021, officials from the Ministry met with the committee. These had come to provide an update on the health-related infrastructure in the country.
Rukungiri Municipality MP, Dr Elisa Rutahigwa had asked for a progress report on the construction of border health facilities. He also needed to know the status under which they would properly operate.
He also said they had completed some facilities at some border points. However, other border points meant to have these facilities had nothing.
‘’It is seemingly selective that some busy border points designated to receive health facilities with laboratories have no sign of construction going on. What level or grading shall we refer to these health facilities?’’ Dr Rutahigwa asked.
In response, Dr Atwine said that the health centres are specialized facilities to help with border control health management. She also said they will refer to them as Port Health Centres. She added that in some places, they failed to acquire land at the border point to set up a health facility.
Furthermore, she informed the MPs that they have been working with the East African Community and the neighbouring countries to construct the facilities.
‘’This was not a knee-jerk reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic. We have previously had other cross-border health challenges and epidemics that had necessitated the installation of these facilities to help provide support to fight outbreaks of diseases like Ebola,’’ she explained.
Dr Diana Atwine also said, owing to financial constraints, they will cover 300 border points in phases.
