Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire identified the suspect as Geoffrey Kitaka, a boda-boda rider at Wakimese estate stage. He staged a roadblock near Hash petrol station in Kyengera at around 10:00 am. An unidentified armed motorist intercepted Kitaka who had started pouring fuel on the road. The motorist tried to reason with the man but failed so he shot in the air. However, during the scuffle, Kitaka managed to cut the motorist and disarmed him.
Additionally, other people sustained injuries from the stray bullets as police responded to disarm the now-armed Kitaka. Among the victims is an unidentified female mobile money attendant who succumbed to a gunshot wound on arrival at Mulago hospital.
Police also shot Kitaka in the leg and he is currently getting treatment while in handcuffs at Mulago hospital. Police also said they will subject Kitaka to a mental check to ascertain whether the suspect is mentally ill.
“Officers have been dispatched to Kitaka’s residence to get more facts and upon conclusion of the investigations, he may be charged with murder and attempted murder,” Owoyesigire said.
