Collins Otieno, the deceased, passed away on Thursday, December 2. This is after the Abimbo mines caved in with 10 individuals working there.
Speaking to the press, Florence Ongung’a, mother to the deceased, revealed that the state had stopped her from proceeding with the burial. She said officials told her she will only be able to do that after all bodies had been recovered from the mines.
However though, she is worried about the skyrocketing mortuary bills as rescue efforts for one person, Tom Okwach continue at the site.
‘’His colleagues were nudging him to go to the mine to make some money instead of sitting at home. I did not even know when he left for the Abimbo mine. I do not have anything. I’m not sure what bill the mortuary will present me with as well as the coffin and transport costs. I appeal to the County Government to help me,’’ Ongung’a stated.
She further revealed that she had been away on errands and only learnt about the incident by phone.
Eight of the miners have been rescued alive with one more still trapped nearly 12 days since the incident occurred.
