Motorists who will have bribed their way out of paying traffic fines will now have to pay twice for the same offense. The development comes after an internal police inquiry revealed that Shs5 billion has been stolen by traffic officers.
These apparently tampered with the penalty payment system in the last two years. They have been diverting funds to other places.
The force’s high-level management instituted the inquiry. It also recommended that all penalties which were illegally wiped off the system by the corrupt officers be reinstated.
Sources from police revealed that the racket involving several personnel majorly revolved around tampering with the express penalty scheme ticketing system.
The director for Traffic and Road Safety Police, Lawrence Nuwabiine has since confirmed the investigation into the theft. He said the investigations have revealed that some motorists used the informal way of paying the express penalty system tickets.
Instead of paying through the bank or mobile money, they instead pay it to individual traffic officers. Another investigation revealed that some of the officers were leaving a life quite beyond their salaries.
This investigation also showed that a number of officers in the ICT and traffic directory have been redeployed according to the police spokesperson, Faridah Nampiima.
