Movement Eased Due To New Katuna Border Post

Travelers moving through the Gatuna and Katuna border posts in Rwanda and Uganda respectively are apparently overjoyed. The reason behind this is the established one-stop-border-post that recently got operationalized.

The travelers said the problems of long queues and inconveniences of clearing twice have now been solved. Two Rwandan frequent travelers yesterday said they come from Rwanda and cross directly into Uganda Immigration at Katuna.

While here, they are cleared by both Rwandan and Ugandan immigration authorities sitting under one roof. They said the same happens for travelers moving from Uganda to Rwanda.

The completion of this one-stop-border post at Katuna border in Kabale District happened in October 2022. Cross-border trade and travel got restricted at Gatuna on the Rwandan side after Rwanda’s government closed the border for three years.

They said they did this because they were constructing the one-stop-border-post. They reopened the border in March of last year, bringing back life to traders at Katuna Border Post on the Ugandan side.

Immigration control and border management in the East African Community enforced this one-stop-border-post. They intended to enhance trade, and promote effective movement of people and goods among other things.

“I am personally grateful for this operationalization of the one-stop-border-post arrangement because it is quick and convenient. Travellers clear once, unlike in the past when we had to jump out of the vehicles to clear on the Rwandan side, then walk to clear on the Ugandan side before boarding our vehicles again. It was time-consuming and exhausting,” Mr Nfitemu, a traveler said.
