Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi, the shadow Finance Minister has said Ugandans should not be mistaken, parliamentarians are broke fellows. Kivumbi says people think MPs have a lot of money to give out which is not right.
He says the salary they get is not as high as exaggerated especially because of taxes at the end of the day. He, therefore, suggests that expectations be lowered when it comes to MPs.
“One of the misconceptions people have is the high salary of legislators. My salary is UGX 11 million, and it comes to UGX 6.1million after taxes. There is no MP who owns an arcade or serious business. These are broke fellows.”
“The expectation of a leader from the people changed, not a leader who advocates for their needs but a donor, one who gives money. The pacesetter is the President. This is a cultural, political and economic challenge,” he added.
A few members of public agreed with him
However, this is something not so many members of the public agreed with. They say it’s absurd for Muwanga Kivumbi to lie on national TV like that.
According to many, there is no way the salaries of MPs can be 6.1M but even so they have a number of allowances that still takes the amount higher.
Some of the enraged public members said when it comes to eating money, all MPs speak the same language.
“When it comes to eating, the whole parliament speaks one language. Spare us this nonsense sir! Don’t mock Ugandans! And you get 200m for car yet a teacher earns 300k. Just eat your money in peace and wait for other issues to make noise,” a one Owakunda said.
