Within just six months, the state has held about six national events which have cost a lot of money. In June alone, the country has held three state functions: Heroes Day, State of Nation Address and the Budget Reading day.
Much as these functions are constitutional and provided for by the law, the current economic times surely don’t favor them. This is why some analysts propose that their costs should be slashed. Muwanga Kivumbi, the shadow finance Minister says these functions are also affecting service delivery.
“These functions are costing billions of shillings that should ideally go to other things. When civil servants come to attend, their allowances are even more than stationery allowances. They do not work on such days, but must all of the 72 ministers attend a state function?”
Ssemujju Nganda on the other hand says the government has no shame when it comes to extravagance. He says in this economy, some people wanted 12 billion for Busoga Youth day. According to him, this is just shameless.
“Parliament bought a big tent because we were spending Shs 50 million every day and that was because we wanted to host big events like budget reading,” Ssemujju said.
Kivumbi however said since they are investing in the new chamber, he hopes there won’t be a need to go to Kololo and Serena.
“We are investing in the new chamber, we pray and hope, upon completion, the president will no longer meet the cost of Kololo and Serena,” Kivumbi said.
