“Therefore, we must continue to address the promotion and protection of human rights without politicizing the issue of human rights. Uganda remains committed to fulfilling its human rights obligations in accordance with its constitution and international law. Our commitment is from the firm belief that it’s suitable for our people, drawn from the bad experience and lessons from the history of dictatorship in Uganda.”
Mr Museveni even revealed that Uganda will voluntarily accept a review. This will be during the 44th session of the universal periodic review. This activity will take place in January to February 2022. He also took the same opportunity to ask for help regarding the refugees Uganda is hosting. Uganda is also currently hosting 1.4 million refugees.
“The predicament of refugees continues to this day. Uganda has maintained its open-door policy on refugees. Currently, the country hosts over 1.4 million refugees, the largest number in Africa. It’s in line with this spirit that we recently took another deliberate step to assist those in distress from Afghanistan.”
However, members of the opposition have been accusing the government in power of constantly violating human rights. The most recent is the issue of Hon. Allan Ssewanyana. They apparently kidnapped him in front of Kigo Prisons just minutes after granting him bail.
