Nabbanja Furious With Government Officials For Mishandling Kasese Flood Victims

Prime Minister Rt Hon Robinah Nabbanja has shown her disappointment and fury with some government officials who are mishandling the Kasese flood victims.

Apparently, three Rivers in Kasese, namely Mubuku, Nyamwamba and Nyamugasane flooded and displaced many people a few days ago.

The victims say the flood destroyed their houses, gardens and other sources of livelihood and the government, therefore, is their only hope now.

Nabbanja who has been very influential in assisting the ordinary person ever since her ascension to the PM office made a trip to Kasese. The main aim was to see how government projects to assist these people are being run.

It should be noted that the government rolled out a number of ways to assist these people. These included availing food to them and beddings. Nabbanja was however disappointed with what she saw.

Officials supplied substandard beans as would have been expected if bought by most government officials. The blankets too were of poor quality while the mosquito nets were for little children. She questioned who had bought the beans and she was informed it was her office that ordered the purchase.

“Who bought these substandard beans? You can’t tell me these were the best beans in the whole of Uganda. However, as government we have given these people 20,000 kgs of beans and posho. For the blankets and mosquito nets, we are taking them back to Kampala to get better ones because these are of poor quality.” Nabbanja said.

The way forward;

The Prime Minister also promised these people that government is in the process of acquiring new land to resettle them. She however cautioned the CAO to be keen while giving out this aid. Nabbanja told him to make sure that the deserved people be the ones who get the help.

She also said that they will send spies to come and see if the exercise is carried out honestly. This was after she expressed shock at the number of people she was told were affected. Nabbanja said that the indicated people are many yet the ones she observed are few.

These river banks first burst in 2015 and government came out to promise people how it was going to construct them. The government said that it had got funds from Egypt to build them but has done nothing since then.
