Namugongo is home to Uganda’s Catholic and Anglican shrines. On the 3rd of June, Ugandans will celebrate the martyrs who died for their faith.
This has always seen pilgrims move long distances to the Uganda Martyr’s Shrine in Namugongo to pay tribute to them. Over the years, the number of pilgrims has only kept in going higher for an unknown reason.
But for this year’s reason, the numbers could have possibly gone up because of what happened in the last two years. The Covid-19 pandemic swept over the entire world in 2020.
By June, the country had been put under a very tight lockdown and it went in for two years. This meant that two Uganda Martyr’s days were not celebrated.
Therefore, this has caused even those who used to miss in the previous years to want to come this year before anything unprecedented happens again in the future.
Hence the very big turn up of people even before the real day is here. Due to these high numbers, security at both the Catholic and Anglican shrines has been beefed up to avert safety threats.
At respective entrance gates yesterday, the faithful were thoroughly checked and reminded to wear masks. Police and army officers kept on patrolling different points to sniff out any threats.
Some of the pilgrims on the ground arrived with their legs and feet swollen and needed immediate treatment which they got, hence hailing the health team there.
With security and health taken care of, the pilgrims have shifted their concern to the weather, which they described as unpredictable.
