National Census Preparations In Full Swing – Statistics Bureau

The Statistics Bureau of Uganda is gearing up for the upcoming national census, which is scheduled to take place next year.

The census is usually carried out every 10 years and this year’s exercise was scheduled to be held from August 24 to August 25.

The National population and Housing census was last conducted in 2014 but at the time the results indicated that Uganda had a population of 34 million people.

As an essential exercise conducted periodically, the census plays a crucial role in gathering accurate and comprehensive data about the country’s population, demographics, and socioeconomic indicators.

In anticipation of this significant event, the Statistics Bureau has been diligently preparing to ensure a smooth and successful census operation.

Recognizing the importance of this undertaking, the bureau is committed to conducting a comprehensive and accurate enumeration of the country’s population. A national census is a fundamental tool for obtaining crucial information about a nation’s inhabitants.

UBOS spokesperson Didacus Okoth says they have so far mapped 87 percent of the entire country remaining with Kampala, Mukono and the ten new cities which are Jinja, Fort Portal, Gulu, Masaka, Mabarara, Arua because people shift every day and by the time we conduct the census they will have gone to other areas.

Meanwhile the data collected during the census process serves as a foundation for evidence-based decision-making and policy formulation across various sectors, including healthcare, education, infrastructure, and economic planning.

To ensure the success of the upcoming census, the Statistics Bureau has undertaken several critical activities. These include the establishment of a dedicated census team comprising experts in demography, statistics, and data analysis.

The bureau has also been collaborating with relevant government agencies, local communities, and international partners to enhance coordination and resource mobilization.

In addition to human resources, the bureau is investing in cutting-edge technology and robust data management systems.

These technological advancements will streamline data collection, processing, and analysis, enabling faster and more accurate results.

To this end, the Statistics Bureau has been conducting rigorous training programs to equip its staff with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle the latest tools and techniques effectively.

Furthermore, the bureau recognizes the importance of public awareness and engagement in maximizing census participation. It has been actively conducting public outreach campaigns to educate citizens about the significance of the census and dispel any misconceptions or concerns.

By fostering a sense of trust and understanding, the bureau aims to encourage full participation from all segments of society, ensuring a comprehensive and representative dataset.

As the Statistics Bureau of Uganda is diligently preparing for next year’s national census, recognizing its vital role in capturing accurate and up-to-date information about the country’s population.
