Eng. Silver Mugisha NWSC’s managing director says some officers steal water from designated fire hydrants. He said this is very wrong because these are put in place to keep water to use in firefighting.
Mugisha adds that currently, 10% of the customers appear to be using water that has been connected illegally. He blamed the huge losses suffered by the corporation on such illegality.
“You have heard that there’s always pressure for us to have fire hydrants. So people go to those fire hydrants including those who sell water – some of them just go and pick water from the fire hydrants, even police. Our fire hydrants are under constant use even when there’s no fire to fight,” Mugisha said.
The police administration, however, said that this is only done by individual police officers and not the entire police force.
The law required NWSC to provide water in the hydrants enough to fight fire outbreaks. At the moment, there are 897 fire hydrants in the Kampala Metropolitan Area alone.
