Bashir Hangi, the UWA Communications Manager announced the birth of a health female gorilla. He revealed that this took place on 14th February, 2023 on Valentine’s Day.
An adult female identified as Tomvi of the Mukiza Mountain Gorilla Family had the baby gorilla. He told the press that this new born brings the number of gorillas in the Mukiza mountain gorilla pack to 19.
“Our field teams have for the last few days been trying to get an image of the baby especially. However, it is tightly guarded by her protective father and mother. This new birth means that there are now 19 individuals in this family” Hangi noted.
He also said this birth is a result of the successful conversation.
“This little bundle of joy is already showing signs of being an active and curious baby. This is also a testimony to the many years of successful conservation,” he said.
This new baby gorilla comes at a time when the UWA has embarked on plans to protect wildlife. It hopes to do this through involving the local residents to reduce conflicts between animals and humans.
