New Coronavirus Strain Confirmed In Uganda

The Government of Uganda has confirmed that there is a new case of the coronavirus strain first detected in South Africa. They further said there is also a case of the variant detected first in Nigeria.

The World Health Organization said the South African B1.351 first came on its radar in South Africa and has now spread across at least 8 other countries.

According to the government, the two variants are said to be more contagious unlike the usual virus. The director of the Uganda Virus Research Institute, Prof. Pontiano Kaleebu said a few people have been reported with these strains. He said Ugandans should for now not be worried, however.

Reporters asked him if the new strain would affect the vaccine but he replied saying they will be watching and tracking.

Uganda recently rolled out its vaccination run and by March 23, 32,526 people had been vaccinated according to ministry of health data.

This strain, however, has been reported in other countries in Europe, USA, and Rwanda.

Some reports show that the same variant has raised concerns in the state of Mississippi. It is not clear though, whether it might impact the vaccine or not.
